German Chocolate Poke Cake Squares

A rich, gooey dessert featuring layers of sweetened condensed milk, caramel, coconut, and pecans over a moist chocolate cake.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix, plus ingredients listed on the box
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk (14 ounces)
  • 1 jar caramel sauce (12 ounces)
  • 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 tub whipped topping (8 ounces)
  • 1/4 cup chocolate syrup

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare the pan. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch pan or line it with parchment for easy removal. Preheat the oven according to the cake mix package directions.
  2. Make the cake batter. Prepare the chocolate cake mix following the package directions, using the exact ingredients and measurements specified on the box.
  3. Bake the cake. Pour the batter into the prepared 9×13-inch pan and bake according to the package directions until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Let the cake cool for 10 minutes on a wire rack.
  4. Poke holes in the warm cake. Use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over the cake about 1 inch apart.
  5. Pour on the sweetened condensed milk. Pour the 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk evenly over the cake, allowing it to seep into the holes and coat the surface.
  6. Drizzle with caramel sauce. Warm the caramel slightly if needed to make it easier to drizzle, then drizzle it evenly over the cake.
  7. Add coconut and pecans. Sprinkle the shredded coconut and chopped pecans over the top, pressing them lightly so they stick to the surface.
  8. Cool completely. Let the cake cool completely at room temperature.
  9. Spread the whipped topping. Once cooled, spread the whipped topping over the cake.
  10. Finish with chocolate syrup. Drizzle the chocolate syrup over the whipped topping.
  11. Chill before serving. Chill the cake for at least 2 hours to set the layers.
